A headstone is the upright memorial that stands at the head of a grave, usually on a base. It is the traditional form of monument, and where a cemetery section permits it, it gives the fullest scope for design, material and inscription.
A full single upright monument starts around $12,000; simpler forms cost less.
What a headstone is
An upright headstone is a standing stone, generally set on a base or plinth, carrying the name, dates and inscription. It may stand alone or form part of a full monument with a covering slab and kerbing over the grave.
Not every section allows one. Many lawn sections permit only flush plaques; upright headstones belong to monumental sections. The cemetery section's rules decide what is possible before design begins.
Materials and styles
Granite is the most common and hard-wearing choice, in a wide range of colours; marble is traditional and elegant but softer; sandstone appears in heritage work. Styles run from simple squared tablets to serpentine tops, carved detail, and community forms such as the Jewish matzevah or a monument with a ceramic photograph.

As an indicative guide, a full single upright monument starts around $12,000 and a double from about $15,000; simpler uprights cost less. Material, size, carving and the inscription all move the figure. This is separate from the cemetery plot. A mason quotes the headstone against the specific grave and section.
